We are located just steps from the 23 mile Volksweg Trail where you can bike, hike or walk; next door to Ivan’s Campground, making us a perfect destination for large group gatherings and moments from Lake Red Rock, Iowa’s largest man-made lake where you can boat, fish, or swim until your heart’s content. Horn’s Ferry Hideaway is also adjacent to the 32 acre Gladys Black Bald Eagle Refuge – making for outstanding bird watching.

For other excitement, check out the Sprint Car Capital of the World at Knoxville Raceway, or visit in early May for Pella’s famous Tulip Time Festival. Historic Pella is a treat to visit any time of year with countless charming shops, dining options, and historic points of interest. Golfing is always a fun alternative!

We have two nearly-identical cabins that are fully-furnished to assure a fantastic getaway.

Both cabins are nearly identical and offer a studio layout with the kitchen, family room and bedroom running together as on large living space.  One cabin is furnished with a king-size bed and a twin sleeper sofa, so sleeps 3 people.  The other cabin has a king-size bed and a queen sleeper sofa, offering capacity for 4 guests.  Cabin amenities are listed below.

Our Namesake

The Horn’s Ferry Bridge was built in the early 1880′s for a tidy sum of $17,787.52. This was the first bridge to cross the Des Moines River in Marion County. As well as being historically significant in terms of allowing commerce between Pella and Knoxville, the construction of the bridge was also technologically significant for its time.

After 101 years of service, in 1982, the bridge was closed to vehicular traffic, but remained open to pedestrians and bicyclists.

In the middle of the night August 31, 1991, one of the stone piers collapsed and in a long, loud, agonizing groan 300 feet of the bridge folded into the river. The remainder of the bridge is maintained as an observation vantage point – an eagle watcher’s dream!

Prior to the bridge, a ferry was operated at this location by Elias Horn who came to Iowa in 1869. Horn bought a small plot of land on the south side of the river and obtained a license to operate a ferry. His flat-bottomed ferry boat carried cattle (5 cents a head), teams of horses and wagons (25 cents), sheep and hogs (3 cents a head), and household goods. Thus, the name Horn’s Ferry Bridge.

The time I spent at the cabin was a springboard for a host of positive changes in my life. God really spoke to me, challenged me, held me, refreshed me and renewed me. I walked into the cabin exhausted, filled with pressures and left realizing the problems were still there, but I had a filled heart knowing Jesus loves me and promises to be with me.

We enjoyed the ‘hideaway’ so very much! What a perfect name! A weekend wasn’t long enough. Thanks for your hospitality.
